Already one of the SouthSide’s top employers, the San Antonio Toyota Manufacturing Plant is adding hundreds more jobs.
“The company expects to add 250 jobs to its operations in San Antonio,” said the Austin American Statesman. “Toyota currently employs about 3,000 people at its plant there.”
The new jobs are in response to “huge demand” for Tacomas and Tundras that are manufactured at the San Antonio plant; the facility will ramp up from 220,000 pickups to 250,000 and will also result in a change to a six-day schedule, reported the Houston Chronicle.
“Sales of the Tacoma and Tundra trucks have been on the rise over the past several years—especially the Tacoma, which has had double-digit sales increases every month since December. In August, Toyota sold 16,230 Tacomas, up from 14,338 that month last year and 12,193 in August 2012, according to company sales reports.” New employees are already being added and “Toyota will hire 20 to 30 people a month and begin training.”
As part of its employee expansion, the company is reportedly looking to add more Texas veterans, said the Chronicle, and “would like to see a military program that prepares military personnel for private-sector employment ‘before their transition.’”
This is a continuation of the company's hiring policies; “Since 2010, the plant has hired more than 40 veterans to work on its maintenance staff alone. Veterans account for 20 percent of the plant’s skilled maintenance force,” said the San Antonio Express News.
The increase in jobs at the Toyota plant is another positive sign for the SouthSide, where new and expanding businesses, popular san Antonio new-home communities, and increasing visitors are helping the area thrive.
“South San Antonio has grown more vibrant in recent years in the way of economic development, thanks to the Toyota plant, the transitioning of two air force bases into industrial/business parks, Texas A&M San Antonio, among several other public and private successes,” said the Bexar Witness. “Now, the San Antonio Public Library and YMCA of Greater San Antonio look to follow suit on the South Side.”
