When it comes to finding a place to live, there are factors that make some cities stand above others. And San Antonio is consistently ranked near the top. Its latest honor: Being named to U.S. News’ list of the nation’s best places to call home.
“U.S. News analyzed the 100 most populous metro areas to find the best places to live,” they said. “To make the top of the list, a place had to have good value, be a desirable place to live, have a strong job market and a high quality of life.” San Antonio came in at No. 23 out of the top 100.
The inaugural list is “intended to help readers make the most informed decision when choosing where to settle down,” they said. “The metro areas included in the rankings are evaluated using data from trusted sources like the United States Census Bureau, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Labor and U.S. News' own internal resources.” U.S. News took the data, categorized it, and applied their own methodology to determine why San Antonio is a popular choice for homebuyers. Some of the categories included:Job Market Index (20 percent)—“measures the strength of each metro area's job market” based on unemployment rate and median salary
Value Index (25 percent)—“measures how comfortably the average resident of each metro area can afford to live within his or her means, based on “Blended Median Annual Household Income” and “Blended Annual Cost of Living”
Quality of Life Index (30 percent)—“measures how satisfied residents are with their daily lives in each ranked metro area,” taking into account:
- Crime rates
- Health care
- Quality of education
By that scale, it’s not surprising that San Antonio was named to the list. “When deciding where to put down roots, many factors are in the eye of the beholder, such as climate, politics, or proximity to extended family,” said Business Insider. “Other aspects are coveted by nearly everybody: affordable housing, access to well-paying jobs, a low cost of living, good schools, and quality healthcare.”
In evaluating the city, U.S. recognized San Antonio’s unique combination of size and small-town warmth, along with its broad range of attractions and amenities and family-friendliness. “San Antonio is the seventh largest city in the United States and is as comfortable as an old pair of jeans,” they said. “It offers big-city amenities and world-renowned attractions coupled with a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. The pace of life in San Antonio can be as active or as quiet as one chooses. Living in a destination city has its benefits” with great recreation, entertainment, culture, dining, and “more than 50 major events and festivals throughout the year. “
