The River Walk and Mission Trail has gained new acclaim, being named to USA TODAY’S 10Best List.
“Summer's the season to get outdoors and enjoy everything Mother Nature has to offer. USA TODAY 10Best asked readers to help find the best outdoor recreational opportunities in the nation—everything from camping to hiking to urban biking. After four weeks of voting, the results are in,” said USA Today.
The publication polled its readers in several categories related to outdoor recreation across the country including:
- Best Parks for Hiking
- Best Recreational Lake
- Best Scenic Campground
- Best Swimming Hole
- Best Urban Trail
The River Walk and Mission Trail was voted the No. 8 Best Urban Trail by readers.
The River Walk and Mission Trail are connected to Mission Concepción, Mission San Jose, Mission San Juan and Mission Espada, as well as to the San Antonio River. The Mission Reach Ecosystem Restoration and Recreation Project recently transformed an eight-mile stretch of the River, extending the Mission Trail on the SouthSide.
The $271 million project helped transformed a section of the river into a “quality riparian woodland ecosystem” with “riverine features and riparian woodlands, reintroduced native plants, enhanced aquatic habitat, and reconnected cultural and historical features,” according to the San Antonio River Improvement Project.
The project included the addition of benches, lights, picnic tables, footbridges and pavilions, making the trail a favorite place for strolling, running, biking, or simply enjoying the scenery.

Mission Reach is just one of many exciting amenities that have helped made the SouthSide a popular choice for today’s buyers. Companies like Toyota, the mixed-use Brooks City Base, and the new Texas A&M University campus continue to grow. New businesses including the brand-new two-story H-E-B and the new YMCA coming to the Mission Marquee Plaza/Mission Library branch area create great new opportunities for jobs and important amenities. New recreational opportunities like the miles of new trails that will wind through the area and along Mitchell Lake to connect with the original Medina River Trail make the area even more ideal.
