The developer behind a very successful just north of San Antonio is headed south.
Austin-based SouthStar Development Partners Inc. has closed on the purchase of Mission Del Lago — the master-planned community that spans 800 acres of land in South San Antonio.
SouthStar acquired the acreage under the name SouthStar Mission del Lago Developer LLC.
The community “is literally an oasis,” says SouthStar Partner and Managing Director Kim Woodbury, who points out that Mission Del Lago is the only master-planned, golf-course community on the South Side. “There is a great opportunity here.”
This oasis features the 17-mile Medina River Trail, the Jim Mattox Park and the Mission Del Lago Golf Course and clubhouse. The Julian G. Gallardo Elementary School is located onsite.
Another plus is Mission Del Lago’s adjacency to the Mitchell Lake Audubon Center — a 1,200-acre habitat that is home to 300 bird species, 120 plant species, and 17 species of mammals.
The original plan for Mission Del Lago called for 2,300 single-family homes. To date, the community boasts 500 residences, and 850 multifamily units.
Now begins the work to determine the best way to ensure that Mission Del Lago realizes its full potential.
“You have a project here that’s a sleeper,” Woodbury explains. “I really think this is a part of the city that warrants more attention.”
Speaking of attention, historically, SouthStar has turned its focus to areas north of San Antonio — to communities like Vintage Oaks in the city of New Braunfels. SouthStar acquired this upscale master-planned community in May 2012.
But SouthStar was ready to go south once it found out that Mission Del Lago was on the sales block.
Says Woodbury: “Our goal is to grow and improve the community to be an icon for all of the great things that are happening on the South Side.”
