There is so much to love about living at Mission del Lago, and taking advantage of all that is offered at the Mitchell Lake Audubon Center right next door is one of the residents’ favorite things to do.
This 1200-acre natural area includes Mitchell Lake plus “215 acres of wetlands and ponds and 385 acres of upland habitat,” creating a “unique and beautiful bird haven. A treasured spot for hiking, birding, and relaxing among spectacular natural surroundings, the Audubon Center also offers a number of events throughout the year. Here are the events you won’t want to miss in the first quarter of 2015.

Learn about volunteer opportunities at the Audubon Center and enjoy a free lunch.
“Volunteers contribute to our wildlife refuge through offering their expertise for special programs, helping with community outreach, providing Visitor Center support, and more,” they said.

If you love owls, mark your calendars for this fun night. There will be a live owl presentation, followed by an “owl prowl” on the trails of the Audubon Center. The full moon should make for an extra special experience.
Volunteer Trail Day with REI
February 7, 9am to noon

Spring Break PICNIC-PALOOZA!
March 10, 11am to 1pm
Yes, Christmas vacation just ended, but it’s time to start thinking about Spring Break! With a week of events, the Audubon Center offers a great opportunity for you to get out with the kids.
“Mitchell Lake Audubon Center will be offering three different programs during the week for kids and families to enjoy, with a picnic outside in the middle. There will be crafts and outdoor investigations and nature activities.”
Programs can be chosen individually or as a group. They include:
An exploration of the world of insects in and near the local wetlands. Includes a bug hunt hike
Play the "migration madness" game and learn all about the birds at Mitchell Lake. You’ll also learn how to use binoculars and how to identify common birds. Includes a bird observation hike around Bird Pond.
• Wetland Wonderland!
Take a deeper look into the wetland habitats of Mitchell Lake Audubon Center, with a study of the ecosystem and animal inhabitants. Includes a wetland walk.
Advanced Birding Techniques
March 21, 7:30 to 11am
