A new information technology (IT) training program from the Veterans Affairs Department (VA) will kick off in San Antonio, one of several cities chosen for online and classroom-based instruction during the launch.

“The pilot Accelerated Learning Programs…have been set up in such a way to expedite employment once training is ended and follow-up to determine longer term success, according to Rosye Cloud, Senior Advisor for Veteran Employment and Acting Director for the Office of Transition, Employment and Economic Impact,” said Military.com.

A unique aspect of the program is that it is not only geared toward younger veterans who might be more inclined to chase a position in the IT field, but also intended to provide an opportunity for older veterans.

"We wanted to run a strong pilot [program], looking at our veterans at the VA, and our mission at VA is to support all-era veterans," Cloud said on Military.com. "We'll be pulling from the population that's looking to be in the labor market regardless of era.”

Applicants are currently being screened for this free program. The costs are covered by the VA “in three payments. A third of the tuition is paid when the veteran is enrolled, another third when they complete the course and the final amount upon moving into a job,” Cloud said. The program is supplementary to GI Bill educational benefits and does not count against them.

The program grew out of Labor Department data that illustrated the need for trained IT professionals with skills in available courses such as web development, including JavaScript and HTML. “For veterans who already have IT skills, there will be programs in cybersecurity,” said Military.com

San Antonio has a substantial military and veteran community, earning the nickname “Military City USA.”

“We’re also home to the Department of Defense’s largest medical center at Joint Base San Antonio Fort Sam Houston. We’re proud to welcome the families of the 132,000 students who graduate from military training here each year, because for us, training, equipping and caring for America’s service members is a way of life,” said Visit San Antonio.

Communities like Mission del Lago attract military with their array of new homes priced from the $140s, abundance of amenities, and convenient setting on the SouthSide.
