The San Antonio River Walk is not just one of the most popular places in the city to spend some time enjoying the scenery, the activities, and the restaurants. It is practically a national treasure. A more recently completed section of the River Walk called Mission Reach has brought the this popular amenity to the SouthSide.

The $271 Mission Reach Ecosystem Restoration and Recreation Project transformed the San Antonio River into “a quality riparian woodland ecosystem” with “riverine features and riparian woodlands, reintroduced native plants, enhances aquatic habitat, and reconnected cultural and historical features,” according to the San Antonio River Improvement Project. The Mission Reach trail has become a favorite place for strolling, running, biking, or simply enjoying the scenery. Mission Reach stretches from Lonestar Boulevard south to Loop 410 South.

The project included three phases of construction:

Aquatic Habitat Restoration over eight miles; Riparian Woodland Habitat Restoration of 334 acres and including more than 20,000 trees & shrubs; Recreational Elements with more than “15 miles of trails, eight street connections, 89 benches, 137 picnic tables, five overlooks with shade structures, nine water edge landings, six foot bridges and four pavilions."

Mission Reach is just one of the many amenities that have helped transform the SouthSide, giving those who grew up here another reason to come back home to raise their families and those who are new to the area yet another reason to love it.

Companies like Toyota, the mixed-use Brooks City Base, and the new Texas A&M University campus continue to grow, as do nearby recreational opportunities. This year, miles of new trails will wind through the community and along Mitchell Lake to connect with the original Medina River Trail, joining the Mitchell Lake Audubon Center and the Mission del Lago Golf Course as favorite places to relax and play.

Mission del Lago is an 800-acre masterplanned community offering quiet yet friendly neighborhoods, an 18-hole golf course, a convenient location close to shopping, dining, and recreation, and an array of homes from the $150s from two of the nation’s most respected builders, Lennar and D.R. Horton
