Investing the Right Amount of Time and Energy Into Buying a House

You’ve avoided the process for one reason or another, but you’re finally at a crossroads and buying a house in 2015 is a must. Maybe you’ve outgrown your current home or you’re ready to settle into retirement, these tips can help you set goals and meet them.

1. Have Someone Hold You Accountable.
Sharing your plan with close friends or your twins who are tired of sharing a room will definitely bring a high level of accountability when it comes to buying a house. Another suggestion, post the news on your social media networks, this huge group of people will hold you to it- publically. And most likely you’ll have friends commenting frequently on your progress and encouraging you to move forward toward your goal.

2. Work Your Connections
Just like when it comes to making other large purchases, buying a house is no exception to the benefits of word of mouth information. Ask around and find out who the real estate agents are that know how to find the right types of homes in the neighborhood you’re looking at. Give the agent your reasons for upgrading and the areas that you are willing to see and those you’re not. One real estate broker suggests taking this step further, ask your potential agent for references.

3. Get a Handle on Your Credit
Hopefully your credit is in order, but in case you’ve had some unforeseen large purchases in the last few years, it’s time to do a little clean up. Don’t wait until you’ve found your next home, if not handled, it could cost you big when buying that next house.

4. Know Your Numbers
How much equity do you have in your property? How much can you afford to put down on your next home? A good real estate agent can help you figure out how much your home is worth and connect you with a lender who can give you good options regarding a loan.

5. Be Inspired
Maybe you’re tired of neutral walls and are ready for a breezy ocean blue. Use the internet and your imagination to design the look of your new home. There’s nothing more motivating or inspiring than creating your ideal property.

6. Get Your List Together
What are deal breakers and what’s adaptable? You probably have a mental list going of what you wish you could change in your current home and what you can’t live without in your next property. Kitchen upgrades, a larger yard or a better neighborhood could be things that make your top musts for buying a house.
